Originally from Duluth, Minnesota, Richard Abbott produces original and one-of-a-kind clay tiles from Portland, Maine. Richard moved to Maine to pursue an education at the Portland School of Art. With a BFA in painting and having also studied sculpture, printmaking, and art history, he went on to receive his MFA in painting from the University of Pennsylvania. Richard continued to pursue his love and talent for art by painting, teaching, and working on commission. While he designed and sculpted a decorative frieze for Philadelphia architect Robert Venturi, Richard became more and more fascinated with ancient, medieval, and Renaissance cultures' concepts of beauty in every day items like utensils and decorations. Ideas of decorative sculpture by way of rubber mold making, casting in cement, and use of masonry dyes became a reality when a few local Maine and New England retailers sold a handful of his designs. And so, Home & Garden Ornament was born!
Home & Garden Ornament now sells over 50 original pieces by Richard Abbott, and sells all over the U.S.A. as well as occasional international sales. Each piece is an original design - not impressions or casts of natural artifacts or living creatures. Each piece is an inspired creation from nature and art history. Richard most often uses "the real thing" for his subject matter, but he also uses photographs, paintings, and drawings when necessary to make each design. Some decorative sculptures take only an afternoon while others can take weeks or even longer. However, all are made in the same design process:
- Subject matter sculpted in clay
- Design cast in plaster to fine-tune it
- Rubber mold made of the finished plaster
- Cement mixture (Type 1 White Portland cement + sand aggregate + masonry dye) poured
- Cure period (varying number of days)
Each piece is available in four earth-toned base colors: Terra Cotta, Verdigris, Sand, and Yellow Ocher. All pieces are color fast and weather proof with a galvanized wire cast into the back for easy hanging indoors or outdoors. It is also possible to create the design as a tile, and set into a wall as a back splash or a focal accent. While there are always new designs in progress, one-of-a-kind commissions are also welcome!
These beautiful pieces of art are made in the U.S.A. and eco-friendly - a unique gift or decoration
that can't be found anywhere else!
